Ramadhan in Mecca (Day 11)

Ajyad Street

2:30 am. I woke up to the black dark room. The power was out. I did not know that darkness can wake you up also. Aah scary… does this will make me use the stairs to go down. 8 flight of stairs. Not good for an old man with bad knees. And then the fridge was buzzing again and the light in the toilet came on. The power was back. Alhamdulillah. I tried to go back to sleep but no let’s get up , I heard myself saying to me. So that’s it. I was up.

I just could not let go the scenes of people get down fighting for a box of dates yesterday on the street . The others running through the crowd to get a bottle of water. Even though the handouts were only biscuits and dried dates; they fought for it. Life is difficult for many, I guess, at the end of a fasting day you just couldn’t contain the desperation in you. The greed and selfishness emerge to feed the hunger and tiredness. Without a strong mind power we will be vulnerable . Fasting will train you to be strong again after you see yourself without it.

Sometime I feel scary to be part of this species. The spectrum of characters and personalities demand endless compromises and goodwill. At a time you find a good heart under that fierce-looking face and other time a selfish shit behind a nice looking smile. Ironically, it is interesting to discover people no matter what they are because somehow it will affirm your own self as part of his/her existence.

They wanted to be with their friends so they shooo-ed you aside. And then another friend dropped by and they made space for him until you ended up on the cold floor. You just smiled to yourself and left as you know the mosque has plenty of space for everyone, so fighting for this one is not worth it.

I feel good today; have a strong feeling of having an exciting day ahead. Although the mountains around Mecca keen to hide the sunrise ,I am sure a beautiful one has just come up. A beautiful morning always gives meaning to be alive . If you missed your stunning morning sky try to catch one tomorrow or the next time you want to feel “alive”.

The sun shines bleak through a heavy cloud. I guess spring is coming or going. You can’t really sure when no trees is around to tell you the season. But it has been cold in the morning for the last few days.

Back in the mosque for Zuhr prayers. The place was buzzing heavily and once in a while chaotic scream took their focus away. Nothing serious, someone was stuck in the pathway.
