Yesterday my auntie Z passed away. Her body gave up due to multiple illness. I rushed back from Nilai to Shah Alam just in time for solat jenazah. The afternoon drizzle accompanied us along the way—the sky was mourning too, I wanted to believe. It was a great loss for all of us. She has always been the center of attention wherever she might be. We adored her for her bold but sweet character.
“Din masukla mari minum teh ni,” she would greet me whenever we dropped by to see her. I moved closer to let her see me clearly. Her vision was deteriorated lately but still can recognize people from the movement and sound. And she always recognised me. I felt remotely special.
“Cik Z berasa guane arini?”, I asked responding to her greeting. For a long time, she was in bed and unable to move without help. Whenever I was there, she would smile and happy.
“Alhamdulillah,” she said. Occasional cold stare summarised her feelings. It must be difficult, but I knew she was strong and would fight for every breathe to see another day.
But around 12.30 pm yesterday we lost her. Forever.
